Boat
Created in 2005, the Extreme 40 is the ultimate racing sailboat powered by wind alone, innovative in design and cutting edge in racing ability.
At 40-foot long, this lightweight carbon fibre catamaran has already shown its ability to provide exciting sailing, very close to the shore, offering a grandstand sport for spectators and a business-to-business experience for guests. The class has attracted many of the world’s top adrenalin-seeking sailors and a significant number of corporate sponsors.
The boats which have two hulls and a deck that is made from a trampoline like netting stretched between the hulls, can reach exhilarating speeds of up to 40 knots (just under 50 miles per hour) and yet even in a light breeze the boats still provide a great ride, flying around on just one hull.
The catamaran can be easily packed into a standard 40-foot container on its own road trailer and can be quickly assembled by its crew, making this class flexible and able to compete at any venue.
The Extreme 40 is constructed under a strict one design rule and a one manufacturer class, this creates a level playing field out on the water and it is down to the skills of the sailors to gain the edge, the eventual winner is the team that performs best on the race course. Each boat is sailed by four sailors plus a ‘fifth man’ spot for a guest to actually race alongside the pro crew – how many people get the opportunity to ride shotgun in a top level sport!
